Understand DMC thread colors, thread codes, unique chart symbols and the difference between stitch counts and thread quantities.
A screen color is not a thread code
Stitchpetal reduces your photo to a small palette, then matches each color to a DMC reference using CIEDE2000 color distance. Several nearby image colors may match one thread, so the final count can be below your chosen limit.
The reference contains 489 ordinary solid floss shades. Color data by Novaboard.app, CC BY 4.0, sampled from digital manufacturer images. These are approximate values, not an official color specification. Compare actual thread or a physical thread card before stitching. Metallic and variegated floss are not included.
Symbols stay with their colors
Enable Symbols in the editor and zoom in. The PDF uses the same symbol for each color. Uppercase and lowercase letters represent different colors. After combining colors, the remaining color keeps its symbol.
Count stitches, then plan your materials
Stitch counts exclude blank cells. Percentages use all non-empty stitches as their denominator. A percentage is a share of the design, not a measurement of thread length. Fabric count, strands, stitching technique and waste affect how much thread you need.
