A small tool for a very personal craft.
Stitchpetal is an independent, free photo-to-cross-stitch tool. You can convert a photo, edit full stitches, save a local backup and create a printable chart without an account.
How it works
Your browser resizes a cropped photo into a stitch grid, reduces its colors, and gives each color a symbol. Edits change that grid directly. The color key and exported PDF read the same pattern data.
What you can make
JPEG and PNG input, up to 300 × 300 stitches and 64 colors, local autosave, JSON backups, and Letter or A4 PDF charts. Choose fewer colors or a smaller grid for an easier project. Screen colors are approximate; compare physical thread before stitching.
DMC color data and attribution
Our reference contains 489 solid floss shades from the DMC color dataset by Novaboard.app, reused under CC BY 4.0. Novaboard describes extracting codes and median RGB values from manufacturer digital shade-card images in its methodology. These are digital approximations, not measurements of physical thread or an official DMC RGB specification.
We fixed the source on September 23, 2026, converted its file format and select a subset for each pattern. The supplied RGB values, names and codes are unchanged; shade 606 has no descriptive name in the source and is labeled by its code. The data is provided without warranty. Download our source snapshot or read the license text. Metallic and variegated floss are outside this palette. Colors may vary with screens, lighting and dye lots.
Open-source building blocks
The interface uses React and TypeScript. Image quantization uses image-q; PDF creation uses pdf-lib. Chart symbols embed IBM Plex Mono under the SIL Open Font License. The poppy sample was generated for this project, and its pattern examples were produced by this converter.
